When it comes right down to it, video game movie adaptations have huge hurdles they have to clear to be good quality. We can list plenty of movies that haven’t cleared these hurdles and thus are stains on fans’ memories. To be successful, you must embrace the source material, make small but understandable changes to fit the movie style and time constrictions, and ensure it looks good visually. When it works? It really works. But when it doesn’t? You remember how bad it is for a lifetime. Nintendo is trying to change the video game movie stigma with the upcoming Super Mario Bros Movie. But now, a new rumor states The Legend Of Zelda might not be far behind.

This rumor comes from an “exclusive report” via Giant Freaking Robot. While it’s important to state once again that this is a rumor, they cite that they have sources reporting this that have been accurate about multiple pieces of news in recent months. So unlike many other rumors, you can make the odds of this happening 50/50.

But the question is, why are they working on a Legend Of Zelda movie right now? The easy answer is that this is their second-biggest franchise outside of Mario. Moreover, it has one of the best worlds that could be adapted into an animated feature.

Unlike with Mario, Link and his supporting characters haven’t been adapted into anything. That is unless you count a certain live-action April Fool’s joke that IGN did one time. But we don’t. We’ve seen teases of what an animated Link adventure could be, as certain games have shown Link in “anime-style,” such as with the opening of one of his titles and the Palutena Smash Bros trailer.

The other reason that Nintendo might have Illumination working on this right now is that if the Super Mario Bros Movie does well when it releases next year, they’ll want to get a head start on what comes next. It took a while to get Mario’s debut to happen, so they probably don’t want to waste any time getting Link up there too.

There have been rumors about Nintendo wanting to bring as much of their IP to the big or small screen as possible. So if this is true, we might be seeing more Nintendo properties getting adapted in the future. But until Nintendo confirms this, take it with a big grain of salt.
