Bethesda and iD Software has issued a statement regarding their upcoming video game convention – -QuakeCon 2020, and have decided to cancel the event due to the growing corornavirus pandemic.

Yes, coronvirus has yet again struck for another video game convention. We’ve seen some of the biggest conventions of the year get cancelled such as GDC 2020, E3 2020, and now QuakeCon 2020. The publisher and developer issued a joint statement on the cancellation of the convention.

The safety of the fans, employees, developers, volunteers, and everyone else involved is too important to jeopardize so they decided to cancel this years 25th celebration convention. However, they do plan on making a return in 2021!

QuakeCon has always been a special event for us and for you – a time when we gather together to play games and build bonds that, for some, have lasted a quarter-century now.

In recent weeks we have spent a lot of time discussing how we might still move forward with QuakeCon this year, particularly given that it’s the 25th year of the event. However, with all of the logistical challenges and uncertainties we currently face due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s QuakeCon. The health and safety of our employees, volunteers, vendors, sponsors, and players will always be our top priority, and in these times it felt wrong to be talking about a gathering when gathering is the last thing any of us should be doing right now.

While we don’t know what the state of the pandemic will be this August, we do know it will not be possible to complete the work and planning with partners, vendors, volunteers, and others that is required to make QuakeCon a success.

We thank all of you – especially the volunteers – for all your work in building and supporting this event year after year. We hope to work with you to come up with other ways to celebrate the spirit of QuakeCon this August, and we look forward to the return of this amazing event next year.

In related news, Coronavirus might be coming for yet another video game related convention — gamescon 2020. With the uncertainty up in the air, we might be seeing a virtual gamescom similar to what is getting planned for E3 2020.

Right now, it seems that there is a possibility that we could still see Gamescom 2020 happen in-person, but it’s still very much dependent on the virus. With that said, it also looks like there have been some talks with the exhibitors and we could see Gamescom 2020 still take place but through digital streams. If this happens, then those who purchased tickets will be able to get a refund. Really, it all boils down to what this virus is like around the world by the time we get close to August.
